Diigo like Django Unchained…AKA bad ass
Diigo
Okay Diigo doesn’t take names and kick ass like Django in a stellar Quentin Taratino movie but it is a great network for mastering successful use of technology and how it can make your life easier. Sounds pretty bad ass to me. Wish everything was so easy. Was skeptical at using at first but now I am really enjoying it. Love being able to bookmark all websites that interest me then create folders to store them in. Diigo also has in my library my Google Reader account so I can basically look at everything all in one community. Question, once you bookmark websites and you then make a folder, how do you add them to the folder? Can’t figure that out either. I know how to create a folder, but I can’t figure out how to add things already bookmarked/tagged to the folder. The tagging allows for quick access when you pull up your library….you can see a tag and be like oh yeah that’s what I want…allows for easy recognition. Check out some things I have placed on my reader that pertain to this class and to why you should use Diigo!
https://diigo.com/0x2f3 Fischbowl is a cool forum developed karlfisch that discusses ways to use technology in higher education….check out these videos he has posted on the Independent project discussing how students would change their school…..really gives us insight as educators on what students want and how they can work with us to facilitate that change….happy students = happy instructors = engagement = increased learning and transfer of knowledge into the world to motivate and influence others http://thefischbowl.blogspot.com/ Independent Project
RSS Feeds
Awesome you tube video for the RSS feed. Explains things in an easy manner that any beginner like myself could understand. After watching that video, I easily subscribed to Google Reader. Apparently, I was subscribed all along but was not using it. Now I am able to use it correctly. Still trying to figure out some kinks…can you not subscribe to Twitter or Facebook and see your newest tweets, posts, etc…in your reader page? That’s where I’m stumped. I want to see all my social media network updates in one area. Is that not possible? I can subscribe to my blog and other blogs and see new comments in one forum but that’s it. So help me Reader super users! Love the ability to create folders. Allows for organization of topics that are meaningful to you.
Great class discussion….love the connections between blogging, RSS feeds, Twitter, etc…it was like a genome map…LOL..not really but made me think of it that way…connections between everything that makes up something…these media networks are all intertwined and can be linked back to one another…like a genetic disorder so to speak. This class is so unique and provides us with the tools to educate with ease. Each week we are provided new resources that may hinder or benefit us. It is up to us to navigate through them and discover the meaning of each. Have bookmarked a few websites mentioned in class by David on my Diigo account. So thank you…keep the suggestions and insight coming!

Great post! I checked out Fischbowl…this sort of thing (ie alternative education) is becoming more and more common in the No Child Left Behind era. Carl Roger’s “Freedom to Learn” offers some good examples too. How do you think we assess students in this situation? Is it important to assess them? This goes back to a conversation we were having about mastery? Who decides when you have mastered something? Love what you are doing with Diigo.
Thanks for the Fischbowl link. That’s really interesting.
@ Laura Gogia, Fischbowl is just so cool…It has vitality (like my blog lol), it supports the creativity of thinking amongst students, provides recommendations for growth in one’s own academic environment, allows one another to bounce ideas off each other, continually supportive, etc..should I say more? Glad I found this forum….was just fooling around on Diigo and it came up and I was intrigued…another reason why Diigo is good…helps me out when my brain is dead =) gets it stimulated again so I can be productive and interested in what is going on around me. Still don’t have a concrete answer for mastery. Honestly, I think the individual decides if they have mastered something, whether it be true or not. If it isn’t true, then we need to provide feedback and encouragement to that person so they continue on the path to mastering that particular skills. It is all hypothetical almost. What I believe may be different from you believe…I may think I am the best skier and you may see me and be like umm No you need intense work so it really comes down to the individual I believe. But I truly do not know.
lol then we get to what is truth? I think we can agree that there is an objective standard for skiing, but how much more important is that for the individual than their internal standard? When is it more important? How is the best way to blend those two things? What do you do as that person’s ski instructor? These are fabulous things to consider…
@ Laura…good questions..we should discuss them Thursday. Love the way you think =)
Megan – I can quickly show you Thursday how to add things into your folders. In a nutshell, you click on the gear on the right, select “Subscriptions” and then use the drop down folder options for each subscription.
@bwatwood. sounds great. Show me Thursday if you do not mind…I am a visual learner =)
I’m glad someone else is a bit confused like I am! But the wonderful thing about the internet-people have created step by step tutorials and videos to show those of us who have no clue how to have a clue!
I love the reference to the genome map! You are right, the internet is literally a web, fully interconnected! I do love the way things feed into each other and help out one another-much like the human genome project (where many scientists shared data and collaborated all for one purpose that would better humanity with little need for selfish desires or monetary gain). I always thought of things as independently acting, such as facebook, google, uberhumor-each of these a separate website with no clue the other exists. But then again-bing now will let you search and cross reference facebook to see if people made suggestions. The wonder of the internet right?
